FEHRER AND AUNDE: COOPERATING ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SOFT-LOOK LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION ROOF

The first generation of light-construction roofs has already been developed by FEHRER in cooperation with Daimler.

The sandwich construction method was innovative and successfully combined lightweight construction while offering full technical design freedom.  Similar to its predecessor, the new soft-look lightweight roof is constructed using a mix of polyurethane, fiber glass and paper honeycomb. However, there is one main difference.

The thermoplastic outer shell has been discarded. The outer layer is now comprised of a textile developed by AUNDE and has many excellent characteristics: The cover is now dirt and oil repellant, UV resistant, and waterproof. But that’s not all. Even during the manufacturing process, the textile showed excellent resilience values: The high mechanical forces created during back-compression were no problem for the material. Additionally, the material allows the roof to be produced in a wide array of designs without affecting the underlying physical characteristics.

The intelligent use of a textile skin, PUR fiber composite layers and a honeycomb structure combined into a sandwich structure makes the roof up to 60 percent lighter than a steel roof, while retaining the same stability with a notably increased flexural strength.

AUNDE Group, in close cooperation with its subsidiaries, AUNDE and FEHRER, now offers it all from one source – development of all elements and production of the soft look lightweight construction roof.
